Cradle is the first piece in the Atlantean collection—a series exploring the deep connection between land, sea, and memory. Here, water is both cradle and concealment—a passage into something older than language. It recalls a time when the sea was not a border but a pathway, connecting island to island, soul to story.

Created first as a physical painting and then transformed digitally, this work reflects the artist’s roots in the west of Ireland, where the boundary between earth and water often feels blurred. Inspired by the drowned worlds of Irish folklore and the mythic pull of Atlantis, Cradle evokes the presence of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Sí, or perhaps something nameless that still hums in the deep.

A heavy green sky presses close above a black, glimmering sea. The surface shimmers like oil or starlight on water—quiet, still, but full of movement. The piece captures that feeling of standing at the edge of the Atlantic, where everything feels ancient, alive, and just out of reach.

The sea here is both comfort and mystery. It holds memory the way a cradle holds a child—but it also hides things. In Cradle, we’re invited to look into that dark tide and feel what it stirs in us—something old, maybe forgotten, but never truly gone.

The work’s transition from physical painting to digital form places it firmly in the realm of contemporary digital practice. The shimmering surface, layered depth, and luminous detailing are only possible through digital enhancement, giving the piece a futuristic, otherworldly edge. Originally a hand-painted canvas, Cradle was digitally transformed to heighten its luminosity and depth. The result is a modern seascape—both timeless and technologically evolved—where sea and sky blur into a meditative field of texture and light.

Bridging abstract expressionism and digital art, this piece echoes the emotional resonance of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way while embracing the vast possibilities of digital creation, honouring the past while speaking in the visual language of now.

Hand-painted canvas, scanned and converted to digitally enhanced still.
