Ab-sinthe is a dreamlike meditation on memory, intoxication, and the shifting nature of perception. This work began as a traditional painting, inspired by the waters and hills of the Irish west - echoes of Lough Corrib and the ancient lands of Joyce Country. Through digital enhancement, it has become something otherworldly.
The title, Ab-sinthe, nods both to the absinthe-hued greens of the landscape and to the absent, the unseen.
This piece straddles two traditions: rooted in the tactile lyricism of Irish landscape painting, it also ventures into the realm of digitally native art. The painting's transformation into a digital still enhances its ethereal atmosphere, allowing the luminous qualities of light and colour to bloom in ways traditional media alone could not achieve.
Ab-sinthe invites the viewer to linger in a liminal space - between past and present, land and water, substance and absence. It is part of a broader exploration of digitally reimagined landscapes that reflect both personal memory and collective myth.
The Lake lay - languid - gleaming -
A Spell of Green and Gold -
It lured the Distant Wanderer -
And kept them - in its Hold -
I drank the Light - intoxicant -
It stirred - a restless Air -
A Freedom - feral - fragrant -
That followed - everywhere -
Hand-painted canvas, scanned and converted to digitally enhanced still.
